Ethiopia Signs CAADP Compact

Ethiopia signed their country CAADP compact during the CAADP Roundtable meetings on August 26 through 28, 2009 in Adama town, Ethiopia. This signing made Ethiopia the third country in the COMESA region to sign its CAADP compact.

Burundi Signs CAADP Compact

The Government of Burundi signed the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) country compact on August 24th, 2009. The signing was conducted during the Country’s roundtable meeting with the President of Burundi, His Excellency, Pierre Nkurunziza as guest of honor.

Burundi is the second COMESA country to sign its CAADP compact, following Rwanda’s signing in 2007.

G-8 Issue Statement on Global Food Security, Pledge $20 Billion to Fight Hunger

On July 10, 2009, world leaders at the G8 summit in Italy issued a statement agreeing to increase efforts at fighting hunger on a global scale. The governments agreed to partner with vulnerable countries and regions to help them develop and implement their own food security strategies and increase commitments of financial and technical assistance.

World Food Programme Launches New World Hunger Series of Publications on Food Markets

As part of its series on world hunger, the WFP announced a new series which will focus on the role of functioning food markets in reducing hunger.

This volume analyses the workings of markets in order to identify the sources of market failures in addressing hunger and malnutrition, and to highlight the ways in which they can be improved. The report sets out the ways in which policy formulation and program design can build on the strengths of markets to prevent possible negative effects, important reading for all those involved in the fight against world hunger.
