ReSAKSS Reports on CAADP Progress at Special Discussion on US Food Security Initiative

On December 3, 2009, the Partnership to Cut Hunger and Poverty in Africa hosted a special discussion in Washington, DC on the “Next Steps for the US Food Security Initiative”. Development partners from USAID and representatives from NGOs were present to discuss reflections on the FAO World Food Summit and the Partnership’s US-Africa Forum. ReSAKSS presented on CAADP progress and the outcomes of the fifth CAADP Partnership Platform (PP) which took place in Abuja, Nigeria.

Six Additional African Countries Sign CAADP Compacts

Benin, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Mali and Niger have held CAADP Roundtables culminating in the signing of their country CAADP compacts since late-September. Nigeria is also expected to hold its CAADP Roundtable and sign its country CAADP compact during the last days of October 2009. This will bring the total number of countries, which have signed CAADP compacts up to12 at the end of October 2009. Several other countries, including Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, Malawi, Uganda, Kenya, Swaziland and Zambia are also scheduled to hold their CAADP Roundtables before the end of 2009 or early 2010.

Secretary of State Clinton Cites CAADP as Model for Agricultural Development

In her remarks at the at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) closing plenary, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton cited the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) as a model for promoting agricultural development. Clinton also remarked on the results of Rwanda's CAADP compact, stating that "in three years, Rwanda’s investment in agriculture has increased fivefold and agricultural GDP has doubled".

Sierra Leone Holds CAADP Roundtable, Signs Compact

The Government of Sierra Leone has signed its CAADP compact, making it the second country in West Africa and the fifth on the continent to do so. The country’s Roundtable took place on September 17-18, 2009.

CAADP Launches Online Video Room

CAADP has launched an online video room, which will periodically air informative short movies geared towards the program’s topics and pillar activities. The first video focuses on CAADP Pillar 1 and was produced in partnership with TerrAfrica. The video discusses conservation agriculture, climate change and food security and the importance of transforming poorly managed land for sustainable food production.
