Representatives from the US government and the G-20 highlighted the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) as a model for collaborating with governments to increase agricultural production, food security, investment and poverty reduction at several key events in late September.

United States Chief of Staff and Counselor Cheryl Mills highlighted the importance of utilizing CAADP as a means of collaborating with African countries during her comments at a briefing in New York on September 25, 2009. In her remarks at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) closing plenary, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton cited CAADP as a model for promoting agricultural development. Clinton also remarked on the results of Rwanda’s CAADP compact, stating that “in three years, Rwanda’s investment in agriculture has increased fivefold and agricultural GDP has doubled”. In addition, at the close of the G-20 Summit in Pittsburgh, USA that ran from September 24-25, 2009, the official Leader’s Statement was released, which called for a strengthening of support to the world’s most vulnerable populations through sustained funding and targeted investments to long-term food security. To do this, the leaders call upon the World Bank to work with interested donors and organizations to develop a multilateral trust fund to scale-up agricultural assistance to programs like those developed through CAADP.
