FAO, IFAD, and the ILO team up to investigate the gender dimensions of rural employment for the purpose of poverty reduction.  They emphasize that any policy action to enable pathways out of rural poverty should be informed by a contextual understanding of gender constraints as well as gendered rural livelihoods.

“Climate-Smart” Agriculture, FAO, 2010

Surveying the climate-smart strategies already in place, this report goes on to emphasize the need for greater institutional and financial initiative to better and disseminate climate smart agriculture.  Such information is highly relevant to the CAADP agenda which emphasizes both sustainability and technological adaptation.

This report offers an analysis of rural poverty, its consequences, and viable solutions--among which agricultural development is featured.  This report supports the principles that inform CAADP, but draws attention to the fact that, if agricultural development is to help eradicate poverty, it will have to be carefully planned and strategically implemented.

Climate Change Adaptation Strategies: Water Resources Management Options for Smallholder Farming Systems in Sub-Saharan Africa, Rockefeller Foundation, 2010

Failure to consider and adapt to climate change will reduce the impact of otherwise efficient and effective agricultural development initiatives.  As this study points out, smallholders are extremely vulnerable to climate change.  This study reviews water resource management and adaptation strategies and offers suggestions for future intervention.

This conference collection proposes a more strategic approach to development following the global economic crisis of 2008.  Significantly, within this strategic agenda going foward, agriculture and food security are considered one of seven key pillars for policy action in the G-20 development agenda; moreover, CAADP is listed as one of the development partnership initiatives that should be scaled up in the effort to address food insecurity (p. 432).
