On July 30, the Republic of Sudan signed the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) Compact in Khartoum. The country became the 32nd African nation and the 12th member state in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) region that has signed the CAADP Compact.
The Compact lays out country-specific priorities and needs for investing in agriculture that agreed upon by various stakeholders, and it is in line with the country’s Agriculture Revival Programme (ARP) and the Economic Recovery Programme 2012-2014. It is also aiming to promoting public private partnerships to guide country policy and investment decisions.
Classified as a middle income country, Sudan is playing an important role in Africa’s economy: it represents 3.0 percent of Africa’s total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 5.7 percent of Africa’s total agricultural GDP on average in 2003–2011. Under the CAADP framework, the country is expected to improve political and economic performances and address challenges of food security and nutrition through sound agricultural and rural development policies.
COMESA Secretary-General Sindiso Ngwenya congratulated Sudan for signing the CAADP compact and commended the Sudanese Government for placing agriculture at the centre of economic growth in the region.
