Agriculture and food security are now prominently featured on the development policy agenda of African leaders and policymakers. The 13th annual Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government will take place in Sirte, Libya from June 24 to July 3, 2009. The theme of the summit for this year is “Investing in Agriculture for Economic Growth and Food Security.” ReSAKSS coordinators will attend the summit and share information, analysis, data and tools for setting current and future agricultural investment and policy options. As African governments plan to boost economic growth and reduce poverty through investment in agriculture, ReSAKSS provides the most current and relevant information about which subsectors of agriculture contribute the most to economic growth and food security. For this month’s issue, we are pleased to introduce two studies that provide information on public spending for agriculture in Africa and agricultural growth and investment options in Rwanda. The first knowledge product tracks the progress of different African countries in meeting the commitment of African heads of state to allocate 10 percent of their national budgets to agriculture. The second product explores the agricultural growth and investment options needed to maximize development outcomes in Rwanda.

In addition, this month’s issue provides information on the outcomes of the Regional Dissemination Workshop on Agricultural Trends and Progress in Living Conditions in West Africa, which took place in Accra, Ghana; the Private Sector Convening on CAADP Implementation in Dakar, Senegal; and the World Bank/DFID Public Expenditure Workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. We also provide an update on the status of CAADP implementation in different African countries.

We are more than ever convinced that the time is ripe for a stronger and more integrated knowledge support system within African countries to underpin current and future agricultural and food security investments.
