Country exposure to covid related commodity price shocks: East Africa

The pandemic has not left a single region of the world untouched. Its disruptive eff ects have equally reached into every corner of the global economy. Global primary commodity markets in particular are aff ected by many of the measures taken to adapt to and control the spread of the pandemic. Measures to minimize the risk of cross-border infections interfere with the normal operations of commerce, slowing down or impeding the movement of goods around the globe. The changes aff ecting global supply chains can have signifi cant repercussion on national economies.

ASSESSING COMMUNITY VULNERABILITY TO COVID-19 IN WEST AFRICA

The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted lives across the globe in just a few months. And yet, there are no effective vaccine or treatment to contain its spread. A very likely scenario for African countries is a continued battle with the disease over the next year at least, with steady spread of infections to larger parts of countries, including into more remote areas. While we are dealing with the immediate and multifaceted effects, we need to also look ahead to bolster preparedness to tackle the crisis in likely future hot spots.
