September 26^th -29^th, 2011, Nairobi, Kenya - A recent training workshop “Technical Workshop on CAADP Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E): Gender disaggregation of data and tools for planning” was held to focus on training on methods, tools and processes for collecting, managing, analyzing and reporting gender disaggregated data in relation to agriculture, investment and poverty.  The Workshop was organized by the Regional Strategic Analysis and Knowledge Support Systems Eastern and Central Africa node (ReSAKSS –ECA) in collaboration with the HarvestChoice team of the International Food Policy Institute (IFPRI)  and the Poverty and Gender Program of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI).  The workshop was co-funded by IFPRI and USAID.

Participants of this workshop come from different backgrounds and organizations in monitoring and evaluation of agriculture and rural development at regional and national levels especially those involved in the collection, management and analysis of agriculture data.  A large component to the Workshop was for participants to share experiences experiences of managing data on gender in their various countries.  Participants arrived from Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania and other regional organizations.  Participants identified potential gaps in their various related works and opportunities for increasing gender data throughout research practices.  A total of 33 participants were trained, 22 men and 11 women.

The listed objectives of the Workshop overall were to:

1. Discuss the operationalization of the gender disaggregation of indicators as proposed in the CAADP monitoring and evaluation framework;
2. Share successful experiences with collecting, managing and analyzing gender disaggregated agriculture and investments data in the region;
3. Identify gaps in capacity, tools and methods for collecting, managing and analyzing gender disaggregated agriculture and investments data;
4. Develop a plan for building capacity and supporting collection, managing and analyzing gender disaggregated data at country level.
5. Explore and review data, knowledge products and tools developed by HarvestChoice and ReSAKSS to examine their reliability and relevance for development planning and policy analysis in the region.
