2008 ReSAKSS Annual Trends Report

ReSAKSS recently published the 2008 Annual Trends Report entitled "Monitoring Agricultural Sector Performance, Growth, and Poverty in Africa," which highlights developments in the agricultural sector in Africa from2007 to 2008. The report focuses on economic and agricultural performance, key trends in poverty reduction, food security, governance, markets, trade, and investments. It finds that new commitments by donors and governments to the agricultural sector have been made through programs such as the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) and other country-specific programs. The CAADP calls for an increase in national agricultural growth rates of at least 6 percent per year and the dedication of 10 percent of national budgets to agriculture to ensure broad-based economic growth and poverty reduction. While impressive gains have already been made by several countries, the report concludes that these investments will lead to broad-based agricultural growth, economic growth, and poverty reduction across the continent only in tandem with increased efficiency of spending and regional economic and political integration.
