Gender-sensitive policy and programming have an integral role to play in fostering inclusive agricultural growth to meet the commitments of African countries to the Malabo Declaration goals. The 2019 Annual Trends and Outlook Report from ReSAKSS applies a gender lens to key issues that must be addressed to fully achieve these goals.

Social protection initiatives in Africa increasingly aim to institutionalize systems that guarantee assistance for the poor and protect the vulnerable against livelihood risks. Through direct and indirect income effects, social protection programs can also play an instrumental role in promoting agricultural development and, more broadly, economic growth.

This report is primarily for mutual review at the continental level, the process that culminates in the annual CAADP Partnership Platform meeting (CAADP PP) that brings together representatives of the leading Regional Economic Communities (RECs) as well as other regional organizations dealing with agriculture, major bilateral and multilateral development agencies, and private-sector and farmers’ organizations to review overall progress in the implementation of CAADP at the Africawide level.

Given its heavy reliance on rainfed agriculture and projected climatic and weather changes, SSA faces multidimensional challenges in ensuring food and nutrition security as well as preserving its ecosystems. In this regard, climate-smart agriculture (CSA) can play an important role in addressing the interlinked challenges of food security and climate change.

Never before has so much attention been paid to nutrition in development dialogues and planning. The early design of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) recognized the important role nutrition plays in achieving development goals, but little thought was given to how to integrate nutrition into agriculture and related development investment plans.
