ReSAKSS participates in Climate Change Adaptation Symposium in Ibadan

The University of Ibadan hosted the 2nd Symposium on Climate Change Adaptation In Africa on May 14-15. The symposium was co-organized with Manchester Metropolitan University (UK), Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (Germany) and the International Climate Change Information Programme (ICCIP) in Ibadan, Nigeria.

The Symposium is an interdisciplinary event, mobilizing African and non-African scholars undertaking research and/or executing climate change projects in the African continent. It focused on enhancing Africa´s capacity to cope with climate change and allowed participants to showcase experiences from research, field projects and best practices in climate change adaptation in African countries.

The event was moderated by Dr. Olawale E. Olayide and keynote addresses were delivered by Professor Walter Leal of Manchester Metropolitan University (UK) and Hamburg University (Germany) and by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka.

Scientific sessions featured technical presentations from African scholars on the themes Implementing Climate Change Adaptation in Rural Areas and Communities; Resilience and Hazards; Climate Change and Agriculture; Information, Communication, Education and Training on Climate Change; and Climate Change and Health.

Development institutions invited to the event included the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

ReSAKSS was invited to host a plenary session to present its recent knowledge products.  During the session Dr. Mbaye Yade, ReSAKSS West African Regional Coordinator, presented the latest Annual Trends and Outlook Report (ATOR) titled: “A Thriving Agricultural Sector in A Changing Climate: Meeting Malabo Declaration Goals through Climate-Smart Agriculture” and highlighted the best practices and the key recommendations for Africa to adopt Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA).

The 2016 ATOR examines the contribution of CSA to meeting Malabo Declaration goals by taking stock of current knowledge on the effects of climate change, reviewing existing evidence of the effectiveness of various CSA strategies, and discussing examples of CSA-based practices and tools for developing evidence-based policies and programs.

During the session Mohamed Ahid, ReSAKSS Web and Database Developer, took the opportunity to present the ReSAKSS website which provides continental, regional and national level data and related analytical and knowledge products on the CAADP implementation agenda. This includes a variety of resources: data, charts, maps, technical reports, and other publications related to issues affecting African economies, including climate change.

To close the ReSAKSS session during the 2nd Symposium on Climate Change Adaptation In Africa, ReSAKSS promoted the ReSAKSS Data Challenge, a competition for enthusiastic data users to showcase their creativity and analytical skills by using data and other resources on the ReSAKSS website to develop an innovative knowledge product that addresses a development challenge faced by Africa.

Climate change specialists, researchers and Ibadan high school students attending the event showed great interest in ReSAKSS‘ work and were all encouraged to participate in the Africa-wide competition and become African data champions.

The two-day symposium triggered fruitful exchange and high-level discussion of methodological approaches and experiences; provided research institutions, universities, NGOs and enterprises with an opportunity to display and present their work in the field of climate change adaptation; and enabled participants to network and explore future possibilities for cooperation.
